As you may know, human trafficking is my heart cause. The Polaris Project is a force in combating this modern nightmare and I wanted to share the report that they just released relating to massage parlors.
The most important piece I want you to take from this report is…
There is something everyone can do to be a hero and fight human trafficking!
Here is what Polaris suggests:
There are many things you can do to help end massage parlor trafficking. Some include:
1. Advocate for sound laws regulating massage businesses.
- Call your city council member and let them know you want strong laws to prevent trafficking and protect victims.
- Stay tuned – we’re launching a national mass mobilizing effort to change laws!
2. Call out the press for exposing victims. Let newspaper reporters and editors know they should not publicize the names of women arrested for “prostitution” at massage parlors.
- Write a quick Letter to the Editor like this one we had published in the Chicago Tribune
- Call out bad reporting on social media using the hashtag #massageparlortrafficking
3. Share what you know and shut down “happy endings” jokes. We are all responsible for shifting our culture to one that treats human trafficking as a serious problem, not a joke
- Share our quiz, “How Much Do You Know About Massage Parlor Trafficking” or Fact Sheet on massage parlor trafficking.
- Attend a documentary screening or host your own. We are holding screenings of the documentary Save My Seoul in 11 cities around the country (don’t see a screening in your area? Check out our toolkit for hosting your own screening of Save My Seoul.)
- Call out “happy endings” jokes on social media using the hashtag #massageparlortrafficking
